I received a letter the other day from a company informing me that my domain name was soon due for renewal and they would very kindly "save" me from losing my domain name. All I had to do was log on to their website, fill out a form and pay some money (of course) and the domain would be rescued from the brink of eternal loss.
What they omitted to say (in the large print) was that the domain name was fine and nothing would happen to it as long as my existing web host was "on the job". What they did not realise was that the domain eight28.com is well taken care of.
If you get a letter like this, then please make sure, make sure, make sure you read the small print very carefully and fully understand exactly what the implications will be if you move your domain name to them. In most cases the DNS settings will be different and that could have a serious impact on the domain. The worst part about this is that if the domain stops working, there is nothing that can be done about it at this end. The control of the domain will reside with the 'new' hosts and any settings/ changes must be done via them. Your existing email will cease to work and your website will resut in errors.
In my case, I simply threw the letter away. If you get a letter like that and you're unsure what to do, simply get in touch with your Eight28 Admin Associate, who will advise you on the best way forward. (Please make sure you have a waste paper bin to hand when you call).
If you're an existing client and have already filled out the form on their website and need us to deal with this as a matter of urgency, please fill out a support ticket.
